NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado saw several significant victories for reproductive freedom during the 2017 legislative session, and successfully fought back anti-choice bills that would restrict the right to choose in Colorado.
Our coalition successfully passed 12 month birth control as well as continued funding for the LARC for Colorado family planning program. We also passed House Resolution 17-1005, affirming the Colorado’s dedication to recognize abortion and reproductive healthcare as a central component to women’s health.
We also defeated 5 anti-choice targeted bills including the #3BadBills in an 11 hour committee hearing that ranged from TRAP laws, to “abortion reversal” and direct personhood. We also successfully defeated a “Mega-Bill” of anti-abortion legislation, SB17-284.
Unfortunately, we faced a bittersweet moment with parental leave legislation. The FAMLI Act, sponsored by Rep. Winter, the bill made it to the Senate from the House for the first time but died in its first committee. We were thrilled to have the support and work of our fantastic Medical Advisory Committee who testified many times during #coleg 2017.
The state House of Repesentatives remains nominally pro-choice, but we hope to gain at least one more pro-choice seat in the State Senate in 2018 and begin passing a true pro-active, pro-choice agenda in the 2019 session.
Victories for pro-choice advocates this year included:
Twelve Months of Birth Control
NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado also successfully fought back against anti-choice attacks.
